DAMASK…dam-usk? or da-mask?

The damask pattern has been around a long time!

Isn’t this luxurious?
Who can resist it? We probably all have this pattern somewhere in our homes.
Remember Tricia’s amazing bathroom?Just off the top of my head I know I have a damask pattern on two bulletin boards, a pair of curtains in my daughter’s room, the quilt on my bed, a tote bag…and I’m sure there’s more but it’s just not coming to mind at the moment.
When I took a quick look at damask patterns on Pinterest there were a few that caught my eye.

A damask wedding cake

Even a tattoo labeled damask!
Can’t say I recommend it but it did catch my eye.

Beverly at Mominizer has done some amazing wall treatments using damask stencils.

So here’s my dilemma. I’ve pronounced damask one way for years! Ever since my college days studying Interior Design.
But here lately I’ve been wondering if I’m pronouncing it the right way.
(Maybe too much HGTV and listening to those amazing Canadian designers.)

I looked up the definition of damask and this was the first one I found.

damask – noun (dam-uhsk)
1. a reversible fabric of linen, silk, cotton or wool woven with patterns.
Dictionary.com

Yes! This is the way I’ve always pronounced it! My heart did a little happy dance!
It didn’t dance long.

damask – noun  \ˈda-məsk\
1. a firm lustrous fabric (as of linen, cotton, silk or rayon) made with flat patterns in a satin weave or a plain woven ground on jacquard looms.
MerriamWebster.com

damask – noun ˈdæməsk
1. a type of thick cloth usually made from silk or linen with a pattern that is visible on both sides.
Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary

damask – noun (dam’usk)
1. a reversible fabric of linen, silk, cotton or wool woven with patterns.
Random House Unabridged Dictionary

According to these four definitions it could go either way!
So, the question of the day is…

How do YOU pronounce damask?
dam-usk? or da-mask?

  19. Cindy says:

I love the da-mask fabrics and wall paper that you’ve shown. I’m Canadian, but honestly, I don’t think I’ve heard anyone pronounce it. I don’t have a TV.
So da-mask is how I say it, I guess it’s not really wrong, is it.
    Hugs, Cindy
