Tutorial: New Look for a Simple Burlap Lampshade

Beyond the Screen Door - Burlap & Ribbon LampshadeHave you ever had a Plain Jane lampshade tell you she needs a new outfit? This happens to me all the time!  My Fabric Flower Lampshade being just one example.

Today’s little burlap lady received a sprucing up with a bit of sheer ribbon and trim.

Beyond the Screen Door-Lampshade ProjectShe began life as a simple little burlap shade. My client wanted her new lampshade to have a bit of animal print along the lower edge.

Beyond the Screen Door-Ribbon for lampshadeI found the 1.5″ sheer animal print and a 2.5″ sheer black ribbon at Hobby Lobby.

Beyond the Screen Door - Ribbon for lampshade The black ribbon was too wide for this size shade so I folded 1/2″ of the black ribbon over the edge of the animal print ribbon and sewed the two together.

Beyond the Screen Door-Sheer Ribbon for lampshadeI used a ruffler attachment to ruffle the double ribbon…

Beyond the Screen Door-Gathered Ribbon for lampshadeand attached the ruffled ribbon to the inside lower edge of the lampshade using hot glue.

Beyond the Screen Door-Burlap and Ribbon LampshadeThe trim, found in the home decor section of Hobby Lobby, was also attached with hot glue along the upper and lower edges of the shade.

And there you have it. A brand new outfit to give this little lady a brand new look.

A simple, quick and very inexpensive option for updating and sprucing up a Plain Jane lampshade.

I love this I have a lampshade that needs exactly what you have done but can you tell me what a ruffle attachment is that ribbon or a piece of equipment?

  9. Jana says:

Help! My friend wants me to recover her headboard w/ burlap. Would you recommend sealing with poly spray, mod podge, starch or what to prevent shedding? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thxs, Jana

    • Sonya says:

Hi, Jana. Most shedding occurs while you’re working with the burlap. I generally don’t have much of a problem with shedding after a project is finished. I’d suggest vacuuming the headboard thoroughly after you’re finished. I think this should do the trick! Good luck on your project!
