It would probably be safe to say I raised my kids on old movies and musicals. My girls would choose “Meet Me in Saint Louis” over regular kid shows all the time. “Oklahoma”, “The Sound of Music”, “Grease”, “Gigi”…just to name a few!
When my daughter Kaleigh called a few weeks ago and asked if I would help paint sets for an upcoming production of The Sound of Music I couldn’t say no.
The staircase you see above is actually a revolving scene where one side is part of the Von Trapp family home and the reverse side a mountain scene. So cool! The tricky part was trying to paint faux molding on a 12′ tall flat with stairs! (No interior designers were injured in the making of this set.)
The musical was produced by the Performing Arts Department of Southwestern Christian University. Kaleigh was in charge of choreography, hair and makeup as well as being part of the cast.

“Briggita” and her crown of braids.
Kaleigh has a full cosmetology license but prefers to work as a Special Events Stylist doing hair and makeup for shows like this, weddings, proms and pageants. That beauty school degree comes in handy for her family as well!
The cast did such a great job! I’ve been singing these songs for days!
Over the years, Kaleigh has put her love of musicals into action many times including “My Fair Lady”, “Music Man” and (my personal favorite) Babette, The Feather Duster in “Beauty and the Beast”.
Even though I love all those old musicals, the one’s my kids are in are always the best!
