Burlap & Velvet Bolster Pillow

Burlap Bolster Pillow Pillow

You guys know I have this thing for pillows. Most of the pillows I make are your typical squares or rectangles.

But occasionally I get to make a more fun shape like a bolster or neckroll. At 9″ in diameter by 36″ long this Big Boy definitely qualifies as a BOLSTER.

Layered Trims & Velvet Ruffle

The concept for this pillow started with burlap and long ruffles.

Tara wanted a large bolster pillow to place in a dark mudroom/hallway of her home. She wanted to include burlap and long ruffles at each end.

Velvet Ribbon

Using a few of Tara’s leftover fabrics I placed a red & gold dot as the center focal fabric flanked by 3″ brown velvet ruffles.

Next I added a red, brown and gold tassel fringe.

I didn’t like the way the slightly off color of the red band on the tassel fringe looked against the red & gold fabric so…

Layered Trims

…I took a small brown leather trim and …

…Covered it up! Much better!

Sometimes the best option is not 1 trim but 2!

Each end of the bolster is finished with a long 15″ ruffle out of an oatmeal colored sheer.

Ruffled Ribbon Bolster End Tie

When it came time to figure out what I wanted to tie off each end I experimented with several options. Nothing seems quite right until I found this awesome pre-ruffled trim at Hobby Lobby.

I gathered and knotted off the ends with jute string. I then wrapped the ruffled trim several times around the jute and whip-stitched it secure. I’m already thinking of other places to use this trim!

Mud Room Bolster Pillow

The bolster adds just that needed bit of color and punch to this dark mudroom/hallway that connects the garage and living spaces of Tara’s home.

Even though the bolster is 9″ x 36″ there’s still plenty of room to sit and put on a pair of shoes or drop off your shopping bags as you come through the door.

Just in case you’re interested in what you see behind the bolster…there’s still more of Tara’s home to come!
